Toni & Guy Fluid Metal Styler Review | Curling Your Hair with Straighteners

Last month I was very kindly sent Toni & Guy's Fluid Metal Styler* and I've been having a lot of fun using it. During November I finally learnt how to curl my hair with straighteners, and it's actually much easier than I thought it would be! Today I'm going to be talking you through how you can do it for yourself at home and sharing my thoughts on these (pretty cool looking) hair stylers.

Toni & Guy's Fluid Metal Styler* comes with it's own handy travelling pouch, which matches it's purple and black colour scheme. I've never received a storage bag when I've previously purchased hair straighteners, but I can safely say that it's made using the Fluid Metal Styler* so much easier as the 3m wire doesn't ever get tangled up with my hair dryer (which used to be a recurring problem). Inside the pouch you'll also find a separate quilted heat-proof mat, meaning that you'll be able to use these stylers in confidence, knowing that you won't damage any surfaces in your home.

In terms of design, I love the addition of colour to the hair tool (I'm so used to using entirely black, or at best black and tan-coloured, straighteners), the pop of colour adds a fun twist. I also find this to be a functional addition, as the colourful metallic plates actually make the styler easier to use. They help me to more easily see where I need to place my hair as I use them. Technologically speaking, these titanium plates also work to offer better heat transfer, to enhance hair's shine and to smooth hair follicles. I definitely found that (even on my dry and damaged ends) the Toni & Guy Fluid Metal Styler left my hair looking neater and healthier, by smoothing over my split ends.

Toni & Guy's Fluid Metal Styler* offers a variable digital temperature of up to 230 degrees, but, because of their special titanium plates, they offer superior heating technology. This means that a 230 degree result can be achieved at the lower temperature of 210 degrees - helping to minimise damage without compromising on effectiveness. I used this 210 degree setting when I styled my hair for this blog post and I found the results to be really effective and long lasting. Since taking these photos I've also experimented more with the styler and found that the same great results are achievable when you straighten your hair too. You can expect high quality - smooth, shiny hair - and long-lasting results.

When I curl my hair with Toni & Guy's Fluid Metal Styler* I use the following method:
  1. Brush your hair so it is completely free of knots and tangles.
  2. Part your hair as you prefer - you won't be able to do this later.
  3. Take a medium-to-large section of hair and place the hair between the styler's plates.
  4.  Clamp the plates together and slowly turn the hair straightener until the hair is wrapped around the styler once.
  5.  Slowly and gently pull the styler downwards and away from your head.
  6.  If you want to increase the curl then as you pull the styler away from your head you can continue to rotate the styler.
  7. When the styler reaches the end of the piece of hair you will see that it has a lovely wave or curl - depending on how much you rotated the styler.
  8. Move on to the next piece of hair and repeat this process.
  9. If you want more noticeable curls then use smaller sections of hair. If you just want to add movement and texture then use larger sections of hair.
  10. When you've finished your styling add some hairspray, this will help the curls/waves last for even longer.

Toni & Guy's Fluid Metal Styler* is available from Superdrug for £29.99 (reduced from £90.00)
I'd really highly recommend it, I think that it's an effective hair styler and I'm really happy with it's functionality and the results that it offers. I much prefer it to the hair styler I was previously using - I won't be going back!
